Abstract: This talk presents a study of Shakespeare’s humanism and a review of the teaching of Hamlet as an “ideal humanist” in China in the special historical context. With an examination of the history of the acceptance of Shakespeare in China, the profound significance of teaching and studying Shakespeare in China as part of the humanism education is demonstrated.
Short Bio: CONG Cong is professor of English Department, and Deputy Dean of the Institute of Advanced Studies for Humanities and Social Sciences, Nanjing University. She works on Shakespeare, with a special focus on Shakespeare’s tragedies and humanism. She co-directs the Shakespeare Centre, China jointly established with The Shakespeare Institute at Stratford-upon-Avon and Yilin Press.
