Abstract
Theatre is an art of time and space. It has duration and exists in a three-dimensional physical space shared in some fashion by performer and spectator alike. Dramatic or mimetic theatre throughout history and across cultures engages to varying degrees in representation and illusion and in these instances the stage space is identified as geographically and temporally different than the audience space, and by extension, different from the world outside the theatre. The moment one part of a shared architectural space (the stage) is designated as somehow physically and temporally different than another part of the shared space (the auditorium), the equilibrium between the two sectors is destabilized and time in each space is different. In order for the spectators to understand the performance they must be able to integrate the two spatio-temporal structures into a unified system.
This lecture describes the way in which several (mostly Western) theatre traditions create time and space on the stage and the ways in which audiences and critics have responded. It concludes by looking at how the recent introduction of digital technologies in the form of video and projections is disrupting the centuries-old structures of viewing and comprehending stage time and space.
