讲座提要:
In the Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri (Florence 1265 – Ravenna 1321) tells the story of a journey to the afterlife that he claims to have undertaken during Easter week of the year 1300. In the course of this journey, Dante visits Hell, where unrepentant sinners are punished, Purgatory, where forgiven souls pay their dues before being admitted to Paradise, and Heaven where God and the blessed reside. The great poem is divided into three books, or canticas, named Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso after the realm that each cantica describes.
Focusing on the first canto of Inferno, this lecture discusses the cluster of concepts that are at the core of the Divine Comedy and that, for most Christian believers as well as for Dante, define the essence of the human condition: journey, home, exile, pilgrimage, desire, right and wrong, conversion, salvation.  It asks questions about the voice who says “I” in the poem: who is he? What does he mean when he says that he “found” himself lost? To what extent can we say that character, narrator, and author are one and the same person? It considers the relationship between narrated time and time of narration, the making of the journey and the making of the poem, but also time in relation to history and eternity. Finally it touches on the relation between allegory and historical reality, and between poetry and prophecy.
