Abstract:
The paper is a discussion of the contemporary university and its global prospects within the conditions of our modernity. It seeks to offer both
historical context and a theoretical framework for understanding the present situation. My central concern is with new challenges to the concept of
education, from the perspective of both students and their instructor. The lecture will engage with current contributions to the question ‘What are
universities for?’and will place those questions against the background of Virginia Woolf’s contribution to debates in the 1930s. In its final section,
the lecture turns to the writings of Bruno La Tour and Ludwig Wittgenstein, inorder to press the question of knowledge, education and the human.
