内容提要:

The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare—a play that unfolds around two main Venetian characters among others, Antonio and Shylock, a wealthy and well-connected nobleman of Venice vs. a marginalized Jewish moneylender—remains a gripping story. Greatly appreciated by ordinary readers and professional critics alike, this epoch-signaling drama that emerged in the early modern period in Europe remains richly resonant today in the age of ongoing global economic crisis, climate change, futural uncertainties and planetary despair/hope. This cross-disciplinary lecture, using the film (Al Pacino as Shylock), unpacks some of the key moments and themes of the play from intersectional and transhistorical viewpoints.
