Abstract：
From Woman Warrior to Veteran of Peace

This autumn, we are celebrating The Woman Warrior's thirtieth birthday. Readers have kept that book continuously alive; it has been translated into a score of languages, and read worldwide. It endures as the world changes, and its writer changes, becoming a pacifist. I have just now finished editing an anthology, Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace. I taught 80 veterans to write their stories and poems, and so come home from war. These 80 writers fought in five wars, including the present one in Iraq. As Yeats said, "The end of art is peace." I mean to speak about the 30-year journey from war to peace.

汤亭亭是少数被经典化的当代美国作家，《剑桥美国文学史》对她有专门的研究。她的主要作品有：《女勇士》（THE WOMAN WARRIOR）, 1976；《中国佬》（CHINA MEN）, 1979；《孙行者》（TRIPMASTER MONKEY）, 1989；《第五和平书》（THE FIFTH BOOK OF PEACE）, 2004等。获得各类大奖和荣誉近二十项，其中包括“国家图书评论奖”，“国家图书奖”，“美国学院和艺术与人文研究院大奖”，美国总统克林顿颁发的“国家人文勋章”等。汤亭亭现执教于伯克莱加州大学。
