This talk will look at the way tragedy was staged in Shakespeare’s time. It will explore ‘tragic’ ways of walking; ‘tragic’ ways of speaking; and ‘tragic’ ways of displaying emotion. Looking at text and pictures from the time of Shakespeare, it will ask whether performance in his time, with its ritual and stylisation, was nearer to a form of Chinese opera than has been realised.

简介：

Tiffany Stern is Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature at The Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham. She has written or edited nine books and over sixty chapters and articles on Shakespeare, theatre history from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, book history and editing. General editor of Arden Shakespeare 4 and New Mermaids, she is currently writing a book on ballads, pamphlets and other documents about plays ‘beyond performance’.
