Abstract: In this illustrated lecture, Professor Dobson shows that Shakespeare’s most celebrated play is also the one which has been subjected to the most deletions, often in the name of keeping it up to date. Looking at the ways in which Hamlet has been variously shortened and lengthened for performance over the last four hundred years, he considers the changing relationship between the play’s own interest in editing and interruption, and the demands of theatrical practicality. In our own post-modern age of social media and simultaneity, what would count as an uncut Hamlet?
