Nanjing University collaboration
The Shakespeare Institute entered into its collaboration with Nanjing University in 2016, with the two institutions joining Nanjing-based Yilin Press in establishing The Shakespeare Centre, China.
Nanjing already had a pre-eminent reputation for Shakespeare studies in China, having been the only Chinese university to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth in 1964, and being the institutional home of the influential Shakespearean scholar Professor Cong Cong (co-director of the Centre, alongside Michael Dobson of the Shakespeare Institute and Dr Nan Yuan of Yilin Press).
During the collaboration, students and faculty at Nanjing have served as guinea-pigs and assistants on some of the new actor-friendly Mandarin translations of Shakespeare commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, two of which - Hamlet and Henry V - have been printed by Yilin.
Yilin also commissioned a collection of essays arising from collaborative seminars, Shakespeare and Space, which includes work (also newly translated into Mandarin) by Institute faculty members Tiffany Stern, Chris Laoutaris and Michael Dobson.
The Shakespeare Centre, China staged the only major event in China to mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio, at Nanjing in November 2023 (with speakers including Dr Jessica Chiba and Prof Michael Dobson of the Shakespeare Institute), and Professor Cong came to Birmingham to speak about Chinese translations of the Folio in February 2024
A pan-Chinese competitive student Shakespeare festival, the Youlin Youke Cup, postponed by Covid, had its first full iteration in 2024, with the finals –its panel of judges including Michael Dobson -- taking place in Hangzhou that September. Professor Cong returned to Stratford in November 2024, bringing a party including students who performed with particular distinction in the Youlin Youke Cup to the Institute and also the distinguished Shakespearean scholar and translator Professor Huang Bikang of Peking University. In collaboration with Institute and Drama Department students, the group staged extracts from Professor Bikang’s highly Shakespearean translation of The Peony Pavilion – the masterpiece of Shakespeare’s Chinese contemporary Tang Xianzu - and Professors Cong and Huang joined Professor Dobson and others at a dinner hosted by the German embassy in London to discuss an application on Shakespeare’s behalf for the status of UNESCO world intangible cultural heritage.
The Institute and Nanjing continue to converse on Zoom, and Stratford especially welcomes PhD applications from Nanjing's research community.
