Theme:
Modern East Asia: Comparative Experiences with Urbanization, Environmental Sustainability, Demographic Challenges, and State-led Development

Modern day China, Japan, and Korea have all been shaped by rapid economic growth under state-directed development policies, leading to dramatic and wide-ranging change. This Faculty Seminar will study such change in these three countries by examining the following areas: 1) urban development; 2) the quality of the environment; 3) demographic changes and the role of women in the family and in the workplace. The Seminar will draw insights from several disciplines to explore how these three East Asia countries have responded to these challenges.
