2012年6月9日上午，南京大学与布朗大学合作项目——“性别与人文研究中心”成立典礼暨“中国性别研究”国际会议开幕式在南京大学高研院报告厅隆重举行。
成立典礼由南京大学高研院副院长、“性别与人文研究中心”中方主任何成洲教授主持，南京大学副校长杨忠教授、美国布朗大学Pembroke中心主任Kay Warren教授、南京大学校长助理、高研院院长周宪教授、 “性别与人文研究中心”美方主任布朗大学王玲珍教授作为会议嘉宾做特邀发言。南京大学副校长杨忠代表南京大学向与会的专家学者们表示了热烈欢迎，对南京大学-布朗大学“性别与人文研究中心”的成立和“中国性别研究”国际会议的召开表示热烈祝贺。他介绍了南京大学在人文社科领域悠久的历史和优良的学术传统以及高研院作为以问题为导向、超越院系和学科边界的学术平台成立7年来在推进国际合作与交流、人才培养、学术研究和学科建设等方面取得的丰硕成果。他回顾了南京大学与布朗大学合作项目自2008年以来的发展过程，高度评价了“性别与人文研究”学术合作所取得的丰富学术成果与深远国际影响，并向为研究中心的成立和国际会议的举办作出贡献的各位嘉宾表达了诚挚的谢意。杨忠副校长充分肯定了研究中心成立及性别会议召开的重要意义，认为它们将为该领域的优秀学者提供一个交流对话的良好平台和增进合作的便捷通道。在致辞的最后，他预祝大会圆满成功，并向与会的专家学者表达了最诚挚的祝福。
Kay Warren教授首先对南京大学致力于促进国际学术交流、搭建性别研究平台表示感谢，她指出这次合作的宗旨就是让来自中美两国的优秀学者有机会聚集一堂，对全球范围内性别研究的未来做出探讨和展望。Warren教授总结了过去几年中南京大学与布朗大学在性别研究方面的合作与成效，对大陆、台湾和香港学者的努力做出了高度评价，强调这些研究为我们理解中国性别问题、尤其是女性问题提供了非常重要的依据。她特别指出，南京大学在1920年招收女学生，是中国大学中的翘楚；布朗大学也刚刚举办了招收女生的120周年纪念活动。这意味着两所大学在性别问题有很多值得互相学习、互相促进之处。最后，她祝愿两校合作与本次会议取得成功。
周宪院长对两校学者在性别研究合作中付出的巨大努力表示感谢，并代表高研院表示将一如既往地支持该项目的深入与发展。他介绍了南京作为历史名城、作为文化教育的重镇，南京大学作为中国最好的高校之一，与海外教育界、文化界均有广泛深入的合作。他给予本次合作高度评价，对性别会议的举行表示了热烈的祝贺。
作为性别与人文研究中心美方主任，王玲珍教授代表布朗大学对南京大学相关领导和专家对本次合作的大力支持表示感谢。她指出中国性别研究还有很大的发展空间。她介绍了性别研究与女性主义研究在美国的现状，并指出鉴于文化和意识形态的差异，中国性别研究不能照搬美国模式，而是要结合实际情况，进行深入细致的分析。她认为本次会议对中国性别研究将起到重要的推动作用，将会产生深远的学术影响。
最后，南京大学副校长杨忠教授与布朗大学Pembroke中心主任Kay Warren教授共同为“性别与人文研究中心”揭牌。参加本次“中国性别研究”国际会议的有来自大陆、香港和美国多所国际知名大学的30多为杰出学者和专家。其中，香港大学雷金庆教授、莱斯大学Tani Barlow教授、布朗大学Kay Warren教授做会议主旨发言。
